What Is Magic?

 “What is magic?

There is the wizards’ explanation, which comes in two forms, depending on the age of the wizard. Older wizards talk about candles, circles, planets, stars, bananas, chants, runes and the importance of having at least four good meals every day. Younger wizards, particularly the pale ones who spend most of their time in the High Energy Magic building, chatter at length about fluxes in the morphic nature of the universe, the essentially impermanent quality of even the most apparently rigid time-space framework, the implausibility of reality, and so on: what this means is that they have got hold of something hot and are gabbling the physics as they go along…”

“Then there is the witches’ explanation, which comes in two forms, depending on the age of the witch. Older witches hardly put words to it at all, but may suspect in their hearts that the universe really doesn’t know what the hell is going on and consists of a zillion trillion billion possibilities, and could become any one of them if a trained mind rigid with quantum certainty was inserted in the crack and twisted; that, if you really had to make someone’s hat explode, all you needed to do was twist into that universe where a large number of hat molecules all decide at the same time to bounce off in different directions.

Younger witches, on the other hand, talk about it all the time and believe it involves crystals, mystic forces, and dancing about without yer drawers on.

Everyone may be right, all at the same time. That’s the thing about quantum.”

Scrolls

Unlike witch spells anyone can cast wizard spells by using a scroll if they have enough skills.

First of all you need a scroll of the spell you want to cast. These can be obtained from your friendly neighbourhood wizard or brought in player shops.

Scrolls are dangerous things to carry and can explode if you do not have the right skills to handle them.

Magic.spells.special - controls the amount of scrolls you can carry at any one time.

Magic.items.scrolls - is needed for you to use a scroll.

Magic.points - like everything else casting spells uses up gp

Syntax: cast <spell> from scroll <using component>

Tip: identifying a container as “component pouch” means the spell will look in if for components so that you do not have to carry them in your hands.

Jogloran's Portal of Cheaper Travel

This spell, also known as JPCT, creates a portal door to the destination of your choice.

It is cast on a blorple, an item that is magically bonded to the destination of the portal. Only a wizard can create a jewellery blorple as it requires an octogram to cast.

Remember to look, open and look through the portal before entering it to make sure that you do not end up in the Shades by accident.

In case of a misportal or if you do not wish to be followed, you can ‘shove’ the portal, making it fall over and vanish.

Burning or rumbling portals are bad news and should be not be entered unless you wish to experience some interesting (and short) times.

Chrenedict's Calcerous Covering
